Historic Earthquakes
Since 1836, there have been five earthquakes in the San Francisco Bay Area with a magnitude of 6.75 or greater. The vast majority, 92.6%, of earthquakes in the Bay Area have registered less than a magnitude 3.0, making them likely to go unnoticed.
Magnitude 5.0 or Greater Earthquakes
The San Francisco Bay Area has experienced 100 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater since 1900. The most recent significant earthquake in the area was the 2014 South Napa earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.0.
